در نمونه برداری سوزنی کبد یا آسپیراسیون کبد، توسط سوزن نمونه برداری می توان نمونه ای از بافت کبدی را جهت تشخیص اکثر اختلالات کبدی، اثبات وجود سرطان کبد، یا ارزیابی اثرات داروهای آسیب رساننده به کبد تهیه کرد. همچنین با انجام نمونه برداری های مکرر روند پیشرفت و پاسخ بیماران به درمان بیماری های کبدی مزمنی چون هپاتیت فعال را می توان مشخص نمود.
